Give you an easy example: You have three different cheeses A,B,C and two different crackers 1,2. You are making a platter of two types of cheeses and one type of crackers.
You choose two types of cheeses first, You have three choices(3 choose 2): AB,AC,BC
For AB, you can choose 1 or 2, so you have AB1 or AB2
For BC, you have BC1,BC2
For AC,you have AC1,AC2
total =(3 choose 2)(2 choose 1)=(3)(2)=6
