The network inside your house of local office area is generally considered to be a local area network (LAN). A wide area network (WAN) usually covers a lot more distance and it usually connects LANs to other remote LANs.
In general, a WAN will have extend the network at least half a mile but wide area networks can extend tens of thousands of miles depending on the operational requirements.
