The Chinese Civil War could have been avoided in the early stages of the revolution. The Nationalists, led by anti-Communist politician Chiang Kai-Chek, and the Communists, led by Chairman Mao Zedong, could have reached an agreement on China's future political framework in the 1930s, especially during the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in northeastern China and beyond. But the Japanese were gradually expelled from China by both sides and defeated by the United States and the Soviet Union in the summer of 1945, effectively ending the Second World War. Following that, the Communists and Nationalists resumed their fight against each other with even more zeal than during the Interwar Period. The latter were gradually pushed back until they were forcibly expelled from China and forced to establish a democratic state in Taiwan. On the mainland, however, the Communists won the civil war and established the modern Communist state of China in 1949, led by Mao Zedong.
In short, it was avoidable during the Interwar period and the early stages of World War II on the Asian front, but as it came to an end with the Japanese surrender to the United States in 1945, the Chinese Civil War became unavoidable.
