In my opinion when there is a single gang in one concentrated area, there are not as many issues pertaining to another group becoming violent or the possibly of another gang taking over someones already acclaimed territory.
Additionally, when you have an area with a more concentrated group of individuals who do not believe the same things and don't have access to other financial resources, or family resources there is bound to be some tension. Gangs are a form of family to some individuals and if the "Family" is threatened in any way there is bound to be retaliation.
I am speaking from a social work perspective and lens. I hope this was helpful.
