This problem has several steps and it's hard to draw on a laptop so hang on. The best way to solve this problem is to draw it. The biggest number we have to work with is 1 1/4 so let's draw that first. Since the number 1 is equal to 4/4 I would draw a rectangle or a line and divide it into 4 sections. We will need to add that 1/4 to it, so your drawing should now have five sections (four for the whole number 1 and one for the fraction 1/4). Since all five of those 4ths happen in one hour we need to find how many minutes each section represents. We know that 1 hour is equal to 60 minutes. We can divide 1 hour (60 minutes) into the 5 sections. 60 / 5 = 12. Now we know that each 1/4 mile is 12 minutes. So we can say that their rate per 1/4 mile is 12 minutes. On to the campsite… Now that we know their rate per 1/4 hour we can easily find how long it takes to get to the campsite 3/4 of a mile away. Since each 1/4 section equals 12 minutes, then 3/4 would be equal to 12 + 12 + 12, or 12 times 3. So it would take them 36 minutes to reach their campsite.
