Fractions????

A piece of lath 1/8 in. thick is glued to the edges of a wood strip that is 1/2 in. wide. What is the width of the wood and lath?

To add 1/2 + 1/8, you have to put both fractions in a form with the same denominator and then add the numerators.

 

1/2 is the same as 4/8.

 

So 1/2 + 1/8 = 4/8 + 1/8 = 5/8

 

So the width is 5/8 in.
