In a mixture of concrete, there are three pounds of concrete for each pound of gravel. If the misture totals 52 pounds, how many pounds of gravel is there?

g = pounds of gravel

For each pound of gravel there are 3 pounds of concrete.

3g = pounds of gravel

Added together they equal 52.

g + 3g = 52

4g = 52

g = 13

 

There are 13 pounds of gravel and 39 pounds of concrete.
