Without a doubt, Peel's principles of policing are still applicable today. His nine principles focus on building a strong relationship with the public, gaining compliance versus using force, deterring crime rather than dealing with it, and practicing fair policing.
Many of his principle are based on a solid relationship with the public. The idea of community policing has been around for decades and is still the foundation of most police department's mission statement. Community policing is summarizing how the community and the police are one and the same.
Peel's principles are evident today, when we see how policing is continuing to evolve. Police agencies are now training officers in de-escalation techniques, use of body-worn-cameras, implicit bias, fair and impartial policing and crisis intervention. This new training is geared toward building legitimacy in the public's eyes by reducing use of force and deadly force encounters.
Peel's principles continue to be a framework for how police agencies and officers should operate.
