The Bush vs. Al Gore election was very close to call. Towards the end of Election Day, there was no guaranteed winner and it was pretty much up to Florida as to who would win the election. Florida voted, yet people said it was too close to call and thus decided to recount the ballots. Bush ended up winning in Florida by a mere 0.5% and a recount was instated to make sure all ballots, including absentee ballots, were counted for. However, this question of recounting the votes went all the way up to the Supreme Court. In the decision, Bush v. Gore, 5 justices voted to not recount the ballots, thus electing Bush as president of the United States. This is controversial because the election was decided on 9 justices whom Americans did not vote for and this is very problematic.
