Hi Lexi,
There's a straightforward procedure for finding the maximum and minimum values of a continuous function on a closed interval.
First find any critical points of the function in the interval. These are places where the derivative is equal to 0 or is undefined.
Evaluate the function at each critical point in the interval and at the 2 endpoints of the interval. The largest of these values is the maximum value, and the smallest is the minimum.
