equivalent expression for 5(2h+3)+3h

how to write/explain the above to my 12  year old daughter just learning the concept

The parenthesis are like packages. 5(      ) means you have five packages. Now all the packages contain the same stuff. Here is it 2h + 3.

 

So you have 2h + 3 + 2h + 3 + 2h + 3 + 2h + 3 + 2h + 3.

10h + 15

 

A short cut would be to have 5 multiply everything in the (     ). 5(2h + 3) = 10h + 15.

 

Now we add on the 3h.

 

10h + 15 + 3h = 13h + 15.
