Number of hats as of Tuesday: x + 5 [bought 5]

Number of hats as of Wednesday: (1/2)(x+5) [the other half were destroyed]

Number of hats as of Thursday: (1/2)(x+5) = 17 [note:left over from Wednesday = 17]

Solve for x:

(1/2)(x+5) = 17

(x + 5) = 34 [multiply both sides by 2]

x = 29 [subtract 5 from both sides]

Shanice had 29 hats on Monday.
