A video store charges a one-time membership fee of $11.75 plus $1.50 per video rental. How many videos did Stewart rent if he spends $72.00?

is this correct:

let x= the number of videos Stewart rent

11.75+1.50x=72

-11.75 -11.75

1.50x=60.25

1.5 1.5

x=40.1667 or 40.2

Stewart rented 40 videos.

Your reasoning is good, but when working backwards, 40 videos x $1.50 per video = $60.00. Add to that $11.75 membership and the total is $71.75, not $72. I wonder if the membership fee was actually $12.00? That will allow things to work out nicely!
