When you see multiple terms pushed together like that with parenthesis surrounding them, it means implied multiplication.
To work this problem, simplify and multiply the terms.
-0.5 = -5/10 = -1/2
(98)*(-1/2) = 98/-2 = -49 ; When multiplying something with a fraction, it is the same as dividing by its reciprocal. Also, a negative times (or divided by) a positive equals a negative, and vice versa.
