Hello,
Yes, we can intubate in all circumstances(according to your state as mentioned). I have been educated and trained as follows: As a externship student, we had to have 20 observed intubation check-offs within rotations of OR with an CRNA or Anesthesiologist, Code Blues, or Controlled Intubation in an ICU setting. Once hired as an CRT or RRT we had to perform 30 intubations prior to working in the critical care areas. A respiratory therapist works along with the 3rd and 4th year residents(MD Students) in the ER setting during trauma codes for intubations. Each hospital have their own rules and regulations for the Respiratory Department, Anesthesia Department, and Residents on intubation practices. Make the respiratory therapist has a state license and credentials of CRT/RRT through the NBRC or each State Board credentials to be covered by the guidelines of our practice.
