No. It depends on what it is you are trying to say.
K1 is used to signify hearsay (more so than indirect speech). It denotes the part of the indirect speech you cannot verify or doubt.
For instance, if I want to say that "he said he went to Paris with a beautiful women he just met," you are probably better of using K1 in saying: "Er sagte, er sei nach Paris gefahren, mit einen gutausehenden Frau, die er gerade kennengelernt hätte."
By the same token, if your friend tells you that "she is sick, because she ate something bad", it is perfectly okay to say "Sie sagt, es geht ihr nicht gut, weil sie etwas schlechtes gegessen hat."
