The simplest way to avoid confusion:
a. Source monitoring error = misattribution of source - i.e. where you received an information
For example: let us say that I told you that vitamin supplements are good for you. Several weeks later, you remember that vitamin supplements are healthy when you are the pharmacy but you think that a doctor told you rather than a random person.
b. Source amnesia = you forget where you got a certain information from
For example: when was the first time you were told that the mitochondria was the power house of the cell? You would most likely say you heard it at school but you are unable to recall EXACTLY the person who told you.
