Pharmacology for Nurses - How to administer medications safely.
Side effects of aspirin taken PO include irritation of the alimentary tract mucosa and impaired platelet aggregation. Irritation of the alimentary tract mucosa can result in breaks in the GI integument, inflammation, and bleeding. Impaired platelet aggregation delays clotting time. People vary in their sensitivity to these side effects, as they do to side effects and effectiveness of all medications, so a specific dose is not associated with general "acute aspirin poisoning." If someone has a true allergic reaction to aspirin, any and all doses of aspirin should be voided. Outside of an allergic reaction, negative side effects of aspirin are dependent on (1) the patient's ability to tolerate aspirin including predisposition for GI irritation, impaired blood clotting, and impaired kidney function and (2) dose and duration of daily use over the long term.
