Mandatory Minimums are sentences that a Defendant is required to serve due to the nature of the offense. The judge has no discretion in determining the appropriate sentence once he/she has been convicted. For example, in the War on Drugs Era, possession of crack cocaine guaranteed an automatic five-year sentence.
