Joshua delivers newspapers every afternoon. The trip delivering them takes 45 minutes. the return trip home over the same route takes 30 minutes. If his average speed going is 6 km/h slower than returning home, how long is his paper route?

Let x = speed going, so x + 6 = speed coming home.  

 

Set the two distances equal to each other.  Distance = (rate)(time).

Since the rates are given in km/hour, but the times are given in minutes, convert time to hours:  30 minutes = 0.5 hours, and 45 minutes = 0.75 hours.

 

 Distance to deliver = Distance to home:

 

(x)(0.75) = (x + 6)(0.5)

0.75x  = 0.5x + 3

0.25x = 3

x = 12 km/hour 

 

So, one way distance = (x)(0.75) = (12)(0.75) = 9 km.
