Capital punishment, otherwise known as the death penalty, is when the government determines that death is the only appropriate punishment for a certain offense. In most states, the death penalty is given for first degree murder with aggravated circumstances (such as the age of the victim, or if the victim was a police officer), but the death penalty has also been given in the past for rape and sexual assault of a minor.
