Your not going to like this answer but, there’s no definitive answer to whether Audio-Technica or RØDE is better—it really comes down to personal preference and specific needs. With advancements in modern technology, most microphones within the same type/category/price range deliver very similar results. Both brands offer high-quality options, and your choice may depend on factors like the type of sound you’re looking to capture, the environment you’re recording in, and any additional features you might need. Some questions are listed below that one must ask regarding which microphone you "need" for a given project or recording environment:
- What is the purpose of the microphone you are purchasing. Is it to capture vocals? Record instruments? Being used for podcasts or streaming? Will the microphone be used mainly indoors? Outdoors? Both?
- What connectivity options do you need? Microphones can come in either XLR or USB platforms?
- What polar pattern or "pick up" patter do you need? Omnidirectional? Cardioid? Supercardioid? Hypercardioid? Ultra directional? Figure 8?
- What Frequency Response do you need the microphone to operate in? For instance, a wider frequency response is generally better for capturing more detail.
- What type of microphone are you looking for? A dynamic microphone? A large or small diaphragm condenser microphone (which will require +48V Phantom Power)? A ribbon microphone? A tube microphone? Do you need a lavalier microphone?
- Do you need additional functions like roll-offs or pads on the microphone itself?
By keeping these factors in mind, you’ll be better equipped to choose a microphone that suits your recording needs and preferences. This is why a lot of studios have whats called a "microphone locker". There are just too many factors and variables involved to only have just one microphone. Hope this helps and good luck!
