if you think of a rectangle as two triangles you will understand what the diagonal is for.
5 is the hypotenuse of the triangle
if the area of the rectangle is 12 the possible side lengths are
1 and 12
2 and 6
3 and 4
to see what fits you need the Pythagorean formula a^2 + b^2 = c^2
if c^=25 it cant be the first two because 12^2 and 6 ^2 are more than 25 which needs to be the largest
so the side lengths are 3 and 4
3*4= 12 and 3^2 + 4^2 = 5^2
