Hello! The Miranda Warning and Miranda Rights were established on June 13th 1966 thank to the case Miranda v. Arizona. This Supreme court case ruled that it should be a standard principle that all criminal suspects be advised of their rights before interrogation.
Miranda v. Arizona:
In March of 1963 a Phoenix woman reported to police that she had been abducted and raped in the desert. Through an investigation the police were lead to Ernesto Miranda who had a record as a peeping tom and even though the woman could not identify Miranda in a line up he was still brought into custody and interrogated. Durning this interrogation, Miranda made a false confession that was different from the testimony of the victim which he later recanted because he was unaware that he was under no obligation to speak to the police. The Supreme Court overturned his conviction, but Miranda was retried and convicted in October 1966 anyway, despite the lack of evidence against him. he remained in prison until 1972, and was later stabbed to death in the men’s room of a bar after a poker game in January 1976.
