When Malcolm was visiting his Grandpas farm, he saw that the farm only raised hens and hogs. Malcolm counted 38 heads and 100 feet. How many hens and how many hogs did his grandpa have in the barnyard?

h = number of hens

38 - h = number of 152

 

2h + 4(38 - h) = 100            hens have two legs, hogs have four.

2h + 152 - 4h = 100

-2h = -52

h = 26

38 - h = 12

 

There are twenty-six hens and twelve hogs.
