Understanding math via the real world.
If you just need to know if the slope is positive, negative, or undefined then you want to ask yourself the following:
As I buy more tickets increase, what does the total price do?
If they both go up, then the slope is positive. (picture riding a bike uphill, the more you pedal, the higher you go)
If one goes up and the other one goes down, the slope is negative. (ride the bike downhill, the more you pedal, the lower you go)
If one increases and the other one stays the same all the time then you have a slope of zero. (just riding on a flat street).
Undefined only happens when the price changes, but we don't buy more or less tickets, this would be like riding straight into the air, which is weird, and so the slope is undefined.
To bring in some vocabulary you might be hearing in class:
Slope is a measure of how two things relate to each other. Usually we call the variables "independent" and "dependent". In this case as you buy more tickets, the price goes up, so the number of tickets is the independent variable and the price is the dependent variable. The price you pay depends on how many tickets you buy.
You can calculate an actual number for the slope by finding the change in the dependent variable and dividing it by the change in the independent variable.
Hope that helps!
