I'm glad you're using Anki! It's a great tool, especially for huge tests like the MCAT.
If you are 100 days or more from your MCAT, the most high-yield and effective way to study with Anki is to make your own cards. Why? Well, there are a few reasons.
By formulating the question yourself you build a stronger connection to the material and you have improved long-term retention. Typing the card into Anki further reinforces the connection and solidifies the fact in your memory.
Then, when you review the cards, you'll have several advantages. You'll know that every single card in the deck is accurate, designed to maximize your efficiency of reviewing cards, and high yield, especially if you follow my suggestions below. You'll also be using Anki to reinforce information you already know, reviewing material that you have placed within a context of other facts. Many people make the mistake of trying to memorize thousands of discreet facts with Anki, and that's simply the wrong way to use it. Instead, you want to reinforce facts within their particular context to create strong connections within subjects that will help you reason your way through the higher-order MCAT questions.
You'll want to follow a few basic rules in making cards to really get the most out of them, including:
- Only make cards for facts you understand and can connect to a context web of facts
- Test only one question or fact per card
- Use mnemonics to organize and visualize information, and then elaborate on them
- Ask questions with the most clear and specific wording possible
- Prioritize the information you have to study by only making cards for high-yield facts. Decide in advance what constitutes high yield (e.g. only include facts found in the review books you're using or some other resource)
Even if you're within 100 days from your test, I would still suggest making your own decks if at all possible. It doesn't take much time at all to make Anki cards, and there is a huge pay-off.
