To create "punch" from a sound you'll want to focus on the high-bass-frequencies (125hz - 500hz) and the low-mid-frequencies (500hz - 1khz, possibly up to 3khz). This could be done either by taming down the non-punch-creating frequencies (this is recommended in order to save headroom) or by bringing up and accentuating the punch-creating frequencies. While experimenting with the EQ try boosting frequencies above 3k, all the way up to the end of the EQ spectrum to see what works for your sound. Your ears are the final judge.
Remember that a lot of what is perceived as punch is actually in a higher frequency than we would expect.
