Tips to improve the sleep during the night?

That I know, I don't have physical and psychological problems, but during the last year I slept pretty bad on purpose (playing, studying, etc ) and I feel that this has negatively affected me. Lately I've waken up more times during the night, I sleep less hours continously and I wake up more tired, what can I do to have a good sleep during the night again? Should I use medications or should I use them as a last resort?
