Great question! The best piece of advice I ever received in regards to mixing is to make sure any mixing choices made truly represent the intent and feeling of the song whether it comes from the lyrics or the music as a whole.

Additionally, it's important to place emphasis on the quality of the sounds you capture in order to facilitate mixing later on. Variances in mic positions, the tuning of an instrument, the setup, and/or the quality of the instrument etc. can affect how much time is spent troubleshooting issues in the mix.
