How do I use calculus to make a smooth transition between a quadratic and square root function at a point?

It is not clear exactly what you want to do, but basically you want the two curves to have equal tangents at the point of transition...and the tangents will be figured using calculus. I think such curves will be called osculatory...and you can check on the definition as I had to do!
