Distance = rate * time
The time to go to school is 'x', so the time needed to come back home is 1.5 - x
Distance to school = 2 * x
Distance back to home = 8 * (1.5 - x)
The distance to school is the same distance back to home, so...
2x = 8(1.5 - x)
2x = 12 - 8x
Add 8x to each side.
10x = 12
Divide by 10
x = 1.2 miles
