In many Pacific Island nations, including Fiji, the overall burden of disease has shifted more heavily toward noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) rather than communicable diseases.
Conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality and place a major strain on the healthcare system. This is largely related to lifestyle and dietary changes over time.
That said, communicable diseases (such as respiratory infections, dengue fever, and tuberculosis) are still present and can impact public health, especially during outbreaks.
From a healthcare systems perspective, NCDs tend to create a more sustained burden due to long-term management, complications, and resource utilization.
