Basically, the absolute value means how far from the origin the point is with no sign attached to it. That is, all the values of an absolute are positive regardless of what is inside the absolute value sign. Think of absolute value as how far something is from a given point. If you had a friend that lived 5 miles north of you and another friend that lived 5 miles south of you you would say that each lived 5 miles from you and not one that lives +5 miles from you and another that lives -5 miles from you.
So, for your problem with x = -4 you would set up your calculation as I-4I - 4 = y--->4 - 4 = y---> 0 = y. You would then graph the point (-4,0). I'll leave the rest for you.
