Question

As part of its urban renewal strategy Camtown council makes 1/4 hectare of land available for building middle-income homes. The project manager decides to build 10 houses on blocks of varying sizes.

There are five small blocks, three medium-sized blocks and two large blocks. The medium-sized blocks are 100m^2 larger than the small blocks and the large blocks are 200m^2 larger than the medium-sized ones.

What are the sizes of the blocks?

Hint: 1 hectare = 10000m^2

1/4 hectare = 10,000/4 = 2500 m^2

5s + 3m + 2l = 2500

m = s + 100

l = m + 200 = s + 100 + 200 = s + 300

5s + 3(s + 100) + 2(s + 300)= 2500

5s + 3s + 300 + 2s + 600 = 2500

10s = 1600

s = 160

m = 260

l = 460
