Let Melanie's cousin be represented as C.
Melanie is 3 times as old as her cousin.
M = 3C
The total of their age is 36.
M + C = 36
3C + C = 36
4C = 36
C = 9
Melanie's cousin is 9 years old.

You equation is almost right its 3C+C=36
but you could add them together because its the same variable so its 4C=36 and C equals 9
