How do I solve this problem?? Easy word problem

Question

You have 432 cubic inches of concrete to make a rectangular prism for a small bench. You want the width and the height to be 6 inches less than the length. What should be the dimensions of the bench?

Answer 1

Volume, for a rectangular prism, equals length * width * height.  If the length is x, the width and height are each x - 6.

You can use the 'guess and check' method.  Possible numbers could be 10, 4 and 4.

V = l * w * h

432 = 10 * 4 * 4

432 - 160   Nope.

Try 12, 6 and 6

432 = 12 * 6 * 6

432 = 432    This works.

The dimensions of the bench should be 12 in, 6 in and 6 inches.
