The best way to do this is to first make 34% into a decimal. I know decimals are sort of scary but all a percentage is, is a number multiplied by 100!
If we want to make 34% into a decimal which is the actual number we use, we need to do the opposite of how to make a number into a percentage which is to divide by 100.
34/100 = 0.34. We just moved the decimal two spaces to the left which is the amount of zeros in 100.
Then we divide 51 by 0.34 : 51/0.34 = 150
To check our answer, if we wanted to buy an iphone that was $150 and it was on sale for 34% off, how much money would we need to have to buy this phone. Definitely less than $150 but how much exactly?
To do this we would need to change 34% to a decimal = 0.34
Then we need to multiply .34 by 150 = 51. We found out 34% of 150 is 51.
That is not the price of the phone but that is how much we can take off the original price of the phone.
Extra info: The phone would cost 150-51 which is $99.
