Ethan,
You might want to Google "shoe sizing"; it's my impression that the scale isn't exactly linear through zero, so to speak. As someone who's worn size 12 + 1/2, size 13, and even size 14 shoes, I can say that the manufacturers don't necessarily do exactly the same patterns! (and if you ever try to buy baby clothes, the lack of consistent sizing (which is given by age) is even worse!)
Response: So you're confused, eh Ethan? So do what I suggested and Google it ('shoe sizing chart US'). Turns out US Women's "size 0" equivalent would be 7+3/4" long; US Men's "size 0" equivalent would be 8+1/8" long, both with 1/4" gain for every 1 shoe size increase. BUT this is true ONLY up to shoe size 9 men, 10+1/2 women; above that there is some real funny stuff that goes on: the nominal shoe size takes a hop, and then rapidly increases, as the actual shoe length gets bigger at a steady rate. So, look it up guy, and maybe graph it ("shoe size" vs. actual interior length of shoe in inches) to have a firm grasp of how the "shoe size" system really works. And once you do figure out WHAT it is, IF you can figure out exactly WHY it's that way, THEN I'll concede you're smarter than me!
P.S. You might want to compare how other countries do it better ....

I don't suppose the teacher also gave an conversion equation to go with the problem?
