Kosciusko, if I understand correctly, then there is no "finding" x.  Let's say you have y = 2x -1.

 

You simply pick values for x (anything at all!)  and plug them in to get your y.

 

If we say x = 1, then y = 2(1)-1, so y = 1 and your point is (1,1).

 

If we say x = 5, then y = 2(5) - 1, so y = 9 and your point is (5,9).
