-8x-24=-8y 

1=-1/3x+3/10y

-8x + 8y = 24

(-1/3)x + (3/10)y = 1

 

Divide the first equation by -8 and multiply the second equation  by 30:

 

              x - y = -3

        -10x + 9y = 30

 

Add 10 times the first equation to the second equation:    x  -  y = -3

                                                                                       -  y = 0

 

So, y = 0 and x = -3.

First of all re-arrange the terms so that you can see the relationship more easily.

 

-8x - 24 = -8y => x - y = -3

 

1 = (-1/3)x + (3/10)y => 30 = -10x + 9y => -10x+ 9y = 30

 

x - y = -3

-10x + 9y = 30

 

Substitution is probably easier here since x = y - 3

-10(y - 3) + 9y = 30

-10y + 30 + 9y = 30 => y = 0

x = -3

Sorry I missed the requirement to solve by elimination: x - y = -3 -10x + 9y = 30 multiply the first equation by 10 and add y = 0 x = -3
