4w - 9(6-5w) = 44
4*3 - 9(6 - 5*3) = 44
Compute that out, and if the left hand side equals the right hand side (44), then w=3 is a solution; otherwise it's not a solution. Another approach is to solve the equation for w:
4w - 9(6-5w) = 44
4w - 54 + 45w = 44
49w - 54 = 44
49w = 98
Finish solving for w. If w=3 then w=3 is a solution. If w equals another number besides 3, then w=3 is not a solution.
