The length of a rectangle is 6 ft. less than 2 times the width. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 54 ft., find the length and the width.

Let w = width, then the length = 2w-6

 

Perimeter = 2w + 2l = 2w +2(2w+6) = 54  and solve for w

 

6w + 6 = 54

 

w = 8
