"I don't understand how everyone figures out that for only one person, it will take 9 times as long." - Well if 9 people take a certain amount of time to paint a job, then one person would take nine times as long.
1/8 of 16 minutes is 2 minutes for 1 wall to be painted by the 9 people.
So, if 9 people can paint one wall in 2 minutes, and it takes 1 person 9 times as long, then it will take one person 9 x 2 = 18 minutes to paint one wall.
so, 1 person would take 18 minute /wall times 6 walls, and 18 x 6 = 108
with 4 people, the time is 108/4 = 27.
