the sum of two numbers is 27 and the difference is 3 what are the two numbers?

you can use algebra if you need to...

x and 27-x are the nunbers

(27-x)-x=3

27-x-x=3

-2x=3-27

-2x=-24

x=-24/(-2)

x=12 and 27-x=15

or you could do the following...

27/2=13.5

13 and 14 don't work

12 and 15 do work (down by 1 with 13 and up by 1 with 14)
