You want to go shopping and you have $260 to spend. You go to the mall and find a store that sells jeans for $25, shirts for $50, and shoes for $20. How many jeans, shirts, and shoes can you get if you are limited to only getting 10 items?

Let x = number of jeans, y = number of shirts, and z = number of pairs of shoes.

 

x + y + z = 10   and   25x + 50y + 20z = 260

 

25x + 50y +20(10 - x - y) = 260

 

5x + 30 y = 60

 

The number of jeans and shirts satisfy this equation.  Since jeans, shirts, and pairs of shoes are integers, we can only have the following combination per the last constraint.

 

 

x   0     6   12

 

y   2     1     0

 

z   8     3    -2

 

We can either purchase 2 shirts and 8 pairs of shoes or 6 jeans, 2 shirts, and 3 pairs of shoes.
