Let x = miles traveled on day 1

Let y= miles traveled on day 2

x is twice that of y:

 

x=2y

 

Total distance traveled is the distance traveled on day 1 plus the distance traveled on day 2:

x+y =960

 

Substitute 2y (from first equation) for x in the second equation and solve for y:

2y + y =960

3y=960

y=320 mi

 

Substitute this value of y into either of the two equations and solve for x:

x=2y

x=2(320)

x=640mi

 

They travel 640 miles on day one, and 320 miles on day 2.

Say they travel x miles on the second day, so they travel 2x miles on the first day. So in total, they travel x+2x or 3x miles.

It's given that total distance traveled is 960 mi, so 3x=960 Or x =960/3 Or x=320 m, so 2x= 2x320= 640 mi
