This is actually easy, using Algebra to represents the given facts.

Assume that there are d dimes and n nickels.  The stated fact tells you that d = 8+n.

The total value is $1.40 = 0.10d + 0.05n.

 

Substitute for d in the above--ten you have one equation, with n being the only unknown.  Easy, as I predicted.

 

What you have to concentrate on in word problems is translation of stated facts into equations (or inequalities).
