Inflammation is the body's natural way to protect itself and respond to harm (perceived harm, physical harm, etc). We take for granted the simple inflammatory response that occurs when say we trip and twist our ankle, or how our body responds to illness. In nursing school you have probably studied the labs such as WBC, ESR, CRP, etc. Now more attention has been given to the effects of chronic physical or emotional stress on the body. Much research is being done on the the stress hormones and markers for cortisol and leptin.
