The fluid mosaic model explains that the molecules that compose the membranes of cells are not static like a shell, but are actually constantly moving and dynamic. The phospholipids, transmembrane proteins, channels, and receptors are constantly moving along the plane of the membrane. This allows cell membrane receptors to interact with each other, allowing for intercellular communication. Many signals require that 2 or more membrane proteins come together and interact before signal transduction can take place.
